The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly book meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, there is a new prompt for writers and bloggers alike. This week’s question, submitted by Silver,
Do your children, siblings, or other family members enjoy reading as much as you do?
Nope! Not at ALL. Growing up, family would always get upset with me for reading. They considered it antisocial because I would choose to read instead of sit with them and watch tv every single night. I have never seen my mother pick up a book, though she does read the tabloid newspaper daily. Middle brother never liked books, youngest brother used to like them when he was a kid. He LOVED the Percy Jackson series and named our cat Perseus. Doesn’t do too much reach now that he’s grown up.
I am hoping, however, to instill my love of reading onto my niece. I gifted her a kindle and stocked it with books. Whenever she comes to see me, she’s extremely excited to tell me what new book she just finished, though she’s only turning 9. I cannot wait until she gets a little older so we can start reading and chatting about other books together.
How about you? Do you come from a family of voracious readers? Or are you a lone bookworm such as myself?

We were not readers either, but I am so glad I found the wonder and excitement of books.
That is fantastic about your niece. Yeah!!!
Thanks for sharing, and have a terrific weekend.
Happy Hopping!!

What a beautiful thing to turn your niece on to reading….and what a memory you are creating for her.

My sister actually got me on reading, my parents admire the habit but never did cultivate it, my brother is not interested and said he hasn’t found a single book he ever liked but he is a teenager so the jury is still out on that.
I’m glad you turned your niece, it really is always better to get them when they’re young.I do hope i can one day have a long list of converts under my belt…..
I always hated how it’s instantly ANTI SOCIAL. It can be, but not always!! That’s awesome about your niece!
It’s great that you’re encouraging your niece to read, and she’s excited about telling you about the books she’s read! That was SUPER sweet of you, to give her a Kindle fully stocked with books! You’re an AWESOME aunt! I’m sure you’re looking forward to all the book discussions you two will be having when she gets older.
Reading can be “anti-social” if you’re at a party, and reading a book. Duh. But if you prefer to read instead of watching TV, your family should respect that. Maybe you guys can compromise. Some nights you watch TV with them, and other nights you read.
Thanks for commenting on my own BBH post!! 🙂
I used to get in trouble for wanting to read instead of socialize with the family too–and that’s with a family who enjoyed reading. Go figure.
