Oftentimes, when I’m listening to music, I’ll often think about how great a song might be as a book, whether it literally follow the ‘plot’ of the lyrics, or just follow the feeling of inspiration it gives off. I don’t think I’m the only one that sees this powerful link between music and literature. More and more often, we’re seeing authors putting up their writing playlists or talking about how such and such song always reminds them of a character.
Merging literature and music together, Monday Melodies is a meme where I challenge readers and fellow bloggers to come up with a story to the song of the week. You can either give a description or how you would see a movie play out with part of the song, actually use it as a writing prompt, or even just relate it back to a book you’ve read.
Check out the master list for next week’s song prompt!
Today’s song is In the Pines (Where Did You Sleep Last Night) as covered by Nirvana.
Stasia grew up in a small rural community in Colorado where her house was the only one for miles, which meant her father ruled with impunity. After ten years of violence, her mother decided leaving was her only option, packing her bags in the middle of the night without so much as a farewell to her only child. After that, it was Stasia’s turn to endure, and she did until she met Tommy, who vows to rescue her.
Caught trying to run off together, blood is shed and Stasia’s life is forever changed, though one thing remains the same: violence. Desperate, she runs from home and into the pines, where she discovers things are never truly as they seem.
That would be my little cover and story blurb. I figure this could be a straight thriller story, or could go paranormal. Maybe I’ll actually add this onto story ideas I want to work on!
I’d love to see what you guys can come up with! Drop a comment below with a link to your post so I can check it out, or with suggestions for next week’s Monday Melody.
