Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme was Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don’t Get or Ten Characters I LOVE But Others Seem To Dislike. BUT, to balance it out, and do five and five of each!
Five Characters Everyone Loves but, I just don’t get it
- Edward Cullen
That’s right, I said it. I just, I don’t get it. He’s so mean to Bella at first, then flies off to the other extreme. Then tries to tell her who she can and cannot be friends with. Then disregards her wishes. I just, idk. I’ve always been more of a Jacob fan, when it comes to sides. But overall, Jasper was the best of them all. Also, why not use his mental reading powers for something good? Instead of just eavesdropping on teenagers all day long?
- Sirius Black/James Potter
They’re both asshole bullies. I mean, Snape is a piece of shit too and the fact that he was bullied doesn’t excuse his actions. But, by the same token, the fact that Snape was such an ass doesn’t excuse how Sirius and James behaved. Did they grow up and out of those roles? Possibly, but only JK Rowling would know the answer to that.
- Daenerys Targaryen
I AM SO FRUSTRATED EVERY TIME I READ HER SECTIONS IN ASOIAF! She has absolutely no common sense. What did she expect dragons would do? How did she expect winning a war would be? The fact that she has so far been so unwilling to shed the blood necessary to take back her throne, that she was so easily cowed by that guy who married her, I just am so frustrated. Maybe the next book, whenever if ever it comes out, will see her gaining some wisdom finally after how she was left a bloody mess.
- Tyrion Lannister
Speaking of ASOIAF, this fucking prick! Everyone loves him, thinks oh so clever, he’s going to win it all in spite of his father and family. He’s still a piece of shit, just like the family he despises so much. Angry when Shae betrays him? Murder the girl! Angry when he’s told the girl he was going to marry was a prostitute? Let everyone run a train on her and then think man, what a piece of shit worthless woman she is. Angry when he realises he was a fool for believing that lie? Gonna murder my brother for doing what my father said! He thinks himself so clever, but he is an animal of emotion, simply riding the whims of his fury. I swear I hope I never see him on the Iron Throne.
- Louis de Pointe du Lac
So, I don’t hate him, but I don’t get the love for him either. He’s so….boring. He’s plain. All he does is spend eternity moping around about how he’s a vampire, about all he’s lost. Get over it. Open your eyes man and look at all you’ve gained!
Five Characters I LOVE But Others Seem To Dislike
Okay, so, I fully admit he is a creep. He is gross and just skeevy. But, he’s also so damn clever and amazing at being able to manipulate situations and people. I love the chaos he sows throughout Westeros. I want to see how he brings the world down piece by piece and then rebuilds it with the pieces of his choosing. So intriguing!
I’ve already made my case for Boromir during a Man Crush Monday post. Basically, it’s not his fault for trying to take the ring from Frodo. Anyone with that amount of pressure and desperation would have. In the end, he redeemed himself with his life.
- Mimi (Blue Bloods series)
You know, I like Jack and I like Schuyler, and I like them together. But, I really love Mimi still. She, for the longest time, got the short end of the stick. Fated to be together, she was forever stuck in love with someone who could never love her back for who she was. She persevered though, and eventually, decided to stay true to herself and fuck everyone else. Absolutely love how a character we’re supposed to hate and despise still has enough depth that she can mature and just say fuck this triangle, I’m doing my own thing.
They are both such a mess, such villains, it’s great! Melkor is pure chaos and I just seem to love villains that do things just to do them. Just to pout and be angry and make everyone miserable. Then you have Mairon aka Sauron, who is so loyal to Melkor, he does as he’s told eons after Melkor is gone (though one could argue after Melkor was banished, Mairon does as he does for his own sake). Mairon’s OCD in needing to control things and keep things in order serves as the perfect foil to Melkor’s just watch the world burn attitude.
- Ruth (Never Let Me Go)
She’s the “villain” of this piece that came between Kathy and Tommy, but still I love her. I don’t know if it’s because I like Keira Knightley (and had seen the trailer for the movie before reading the book), or because I just feel more for her than I do Kathy. Out of the two main girls in the book, Ruth had energy, Ruth went and did things, tried to seize life. Kathy just took it and accepted things.
Are there any characters you agree with me on? Disagree and want to convince me one way or another? Let me know!
